Why You Do Not Drug Test

I have never fully understood why more businesses do not drug test their employees. Study after study has proven the positive effects of a having a drug free workplace.

  • Decrease in absenteeism, mistakes at work, theft in the workplace, and problems with supervisors
  • Increase in productivity, competitiveness and employee moral
  • After a positive drug test, an employee who loses a job may not qualify for unemployment compensation benefits.
  • When refusing a drug test an injured employee may forfeit eligibility for workers’ compensation benefits

And yet so many businesses do not drug test. It blows my mind the amount of businesses that do not drug test. For example in Home Health Care did you know that drug testing is not required? Home care companies are required by law to background check their employees, but not drug test. How do you know if the person taking care of your loved one does not do drugs or is taking your loved ones drugs? How do you know if the driver of that Assisted Living Facility bus does not do drugs? If you transport less than 16 people you are not required by law to drug test any of your drivers!

  • Drug testing does not cost you money it only saves you money.
  • When you decide to make your business a drug free workplace all of your existing employees grandfather in. You only have to drug test new hires that come through your door.
  • The best part is that you now qualify for a 5% savings on your workers compensation insurance.

Becoming a drug free workplace is a differentiator that separates your business from every other business out there. Most businesses offer some form a background check on their employees. But how many businesses also drug test? If you are in health care, child care, hospitality industries, one of the best ways to separate yourself from the herd is to be a drug free workplace. I know at EZFingerPrints we practice what we preach and we are proud to be a drug free workplace. Everyone of our employees has been background checked and drug tested. We deal with personal information everyday. How many of your employees deal with personal information or have personal interactions with older adults or children?

The time and money you invest in your pre hire process will return to you in the form of confident, efficient staff and happy, loyal customers. But to hire effectively, you should be not only doing a background check, but a drug test on your employees. Developing good employees depends on the quality and effectiveness of your hiring process.
